Even with the proliferation of online shopping, there is no end to the number of people who visit bookstores in search of chance encounters with books. The best-selling items lined up in the bookstores offer a glimpse of today's Japan. Change Yourself. People on their way home from work flock to the educational books that are sold one after another with such words as “change yourself,” while those who are tired of their daily lives pick up “spiritual” books. We looked into the lives of people we met in the forest of the printed word.
