If you have ever watched "It's a Square World," Michael Bentine's programme, it is likely that you have seen him grappling with the Bumblies. They are little creatures, with twittery voices and rapid movements, who pop up at the most awkward moments - during a lecture or a song - and take over the programme with their antics and furious energy. You must have wondered about them - where they come from, and how they get in. Today you may have a chance to find out because Michael Bentine himself is coming along to talk about them. We say "may" advisedly, because with Bumblies you never know what can happen!

With Christmas two weeks away, the Blue Peter team, led by producer Biddy Baxter, is preparing for its seasonal shows. Tonight, Christopher Trace and Valerie Singleton will present some festive items. They'll share the history of the Christmas tree and introduce a visiting troupe from Kitzbühel, Austria: The Gay Tyrolese, led by Toni Praxmair. This world-famous group of dancers and singers will perform several traditional routines, including the humorous 'Woodcutters' Dance' and a 'Miners' Dance' using cowbells. The most exciting dance will be the 'Schuhplattler,' where the performers slap each other's leather shorts. Additionally, in the first of a new series, Gordon Murray will demonstrate how to make bottle puppets for a Christmas show.

Valerie Singleton thrives on variety, which she finds in abundance on Blue Peter. Her assignments have taken her on whirlwind trips, from a day in Africa to a near-trip to Bangkok, and a quick jaunt to Boulogne, where she was described as "une jeune et jolie personne de 27 ans." "I can't bear things to be the same every day," she explains, preferring the unexpectedness of the job to her previous role as an announcer. Since joining the show in September 1962, Valerie has become a favorite among children. She has found that her wide interests—including riding, yachting, and skiing—often feature in her reports. She also enjoys crafts and has a great fondness for animals, especially Jason and Petra. A former actress, Valerie attended RADA before moving into TV plays and commercials. The opportunity to become an announcer presented a difficult choice, and she admits she "hankered after" acting for a long time. However, she clearly loves Blue Peter, and its audience loves her in return.
