Newly arrived in Canada, Denham Jolly, a young Jamaican immigrant, is introduced to life at Violet Williams’ strict but nurturing rooming house on Manning Avenue. Miss Violet runs her home with a firm hand and clear rules—no drinking, no visitors, no outside shoes. As Denham adjusts to his new environment, he meets other boarders and Miss Violet’s daughter, Marlene, who offers him advice on how to stay in her mother’s good graces.
The house is filled with tension, family dynamics, and comedic clashes, but also quiet moments of growth and belonging. Through shared meals and the daily rhythms of the home, Denham begins to see Violet’s house not just as temporary shelter, but as the start of a new life. In the warmth of the kitchen and among the house’s diverse residents, he begins to dream of the Canada he wants to claim—one of freedom, self-determination, and Black community.
