Night of the Reaper (Recommended)

Popfeed hasn't caught up to the Shudder premier date for this one so I'm posting my review here. It's fine. This is one of those cases where some ambition would have led to a genuinely great movie. The plot is just a big nothingburger, like Scream without teeth. The tension is good for the first hour but eventually I lost interest, I think because the actor who played the Sheriff was just too manic to give a shit about. If anything this would've been better with a simpler plot. Or at least some actual mystery. Or a decent costume. You'd be better off with a truly menacing neo-slasher like Laid To Rest, Haunt or The Last Matinee. Or an entertaining romp like Clown In A Cornfield or Seance. It's fine. Three out of five. Excellent score, nice special effects and yes, if you want a solid Halloween thriller, this one should be on the list. I just wish it had tried a little harder.
